Threadripper 3990x issues with ASUS Mobos
I just wanted to share this info for someone looking into this topic. Asus offers three motherboards for my 3990x processor. On the Asus Prime-Pro board, there’s an asterisk on the box indicating it only supports 2666MHz RAM for that chipset. If you try to push it higher through overclocking, you’ll hit a wall. On the Zenith II Extreme, no asterisk appears—some believe it’s fully compatible with the 3990x. I purchased 256GB DDR4 3200MHz GSkill Trident Neo RAM and installed them in my system. After booting Unraid without DOCP/XMP enabled, the system crashed. After some testing, I found that only 192GB showed up after running memtest86 on a different board. A few sticks weren’t seated properly, but rearranging helped confirm the issue was consistent. Once I switched to the Alpha board, it displayed 256GB RAM at full speed without problems. If you have a 3990x and need an ASUS board, the Alpha is the better choice.
