I’m preparing a premium workstation for optical design and CAD tasks. Ray tracing in optics demands significant memory, so I require 256GB. The difference between ECC and non-ECC RAM is clear—I’ve used BSD only once before. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Current setup includes an Intel X99 CPU, Threadripper 3970X, 256GB RAM, Quadra RTX 6000 GPU, Samsung 980 Pro storage, and data from the same SSD.

ECC reduces the risk of memory issues and nearly prevents corruption. Without ECC, you can't be sure if a memory error occurred. The added complexity of ECC is worth it if it significantly improves reliability.

The ECC RAM includes a chip to fix errors in the data. Have you considered upgrading to an RTX 3080 or 3090 paired with a Quadro 6000, or two?

I might be mistaken, but ECC stands for ECC and non-ECC is clearly not-ECC, and they won't mix. The decision lies with your motherboard, which used to handle this way. Review the Qualified Vendor List to see compatible options. ECC is typically for servers and mainframes handling millions of small calculations, not fewer big ones.

ECC addresses issues in memory and bit flips. In typical desktop setups, the errors it guards against don’t significantly benefit regular apps. It’s mainly useful for servers and server-based programs like file, web, or database servers, as well as virtual machine servers.

RTX 3080 or 3090 offers better performance but at a higher price. My projects often need SOLIDWORKS with a Quadro for GPU boost. In theory it shouldn’t matter, yet I’m forced to pay extra for the Quadra. For the cost of the 6000 and its 4,608 CUDA cores, I could install two 3090s and get just under 21,000 CUDA cores!
