Thoughts about a new computer desk
Thoughts about a new computer desk
Looking for a new desk to fit my computer setup feels like a challenge. The tower is bulky and blocks out the light, making it hard to enjoy the room. My secret lab chair causes discomfort too, with knees rubbing against the keyboard tray. Anyone have suggestions on what to look for? I’m aiming for a 54-inch desk but am open to wider options if needed. Since I have a full tower, placing it on my right side would let me see the lights better. If there’s a good stand for the tower, I’d be fine with a smaller desk. I also have monitors ranging from 2 to 30 inches and a Razer Black Widow Chroma keyboard.
I visited a used furniture shop and chose a sturdy wooden kitchen table. It was priced under $100, though I don’t remember the exact amount. I didn’t buy the raw lumber because it wasn’t worth it.
Many people opt for kitchen butcher block countertops from IKEA. Then they can purchase strong legs or install them by bolting to wall studs and adding drawers or cabinets to support a corner.

It’s not essential to construct your own desk from scratch.
You should consider various options and possibilities.
In general, you should steer clear of particle board desks that require assembly.
If you manage to find a sturdy table or a basic strong desk at a low cost, you can customize it as needed.
Drill holes, add supports, shelves, etc., according to your needs.
It’s about reusing items and saving money too.
Check places like Goodwill, furniture stores offering discounts on damaged goods, yard sales, or ask friends and family.
Someone might offer a useful "desk" for free just to make it easier.
Take measurements in your space, draw a layout, and begin using a tape measure to explore.
I acquired my present desk from Boeing Surplus, once belonging to one of their staff members. It’s exceptionally durable, featuring a 1 1/4" MDF surface with walnut high-pressure laminate, and an industrial-grade steel pullout tray that looks very solid. The desk rests on black square steel legs. The only minor adjustment required was raising it slightly since it was a bit too short for my legs. I resolved this by purchasing 2"x 2" hardwood pieces cut to size at the lumber store to fit each side of the steel frame, along with some walnut stain to match the top. After drilling pilot holes through the wood and about an inch into the underside of the top, I secured the two components onto the surface. The result was seamless and very affordable.
Boeing Surplus has since shut down, making it unlikely you’ll find it nearby anymore. However, there are often alternative sources for used commercial office desks. In fact, gaming communities frequently turn to places like Best Buy or Amazon for PC desks, which tend to be low-quality, overpriced options. It’s simply not worth the effort.
If locating a specialized seller proves difficult, consider reaching out to office furniture retailers. Some may have surplus items stored in basements or warehouses, often as a last resort for customers who don’t like what they see on display. I also purchased a pedestal table and a sturdy end table; the latter was originally a wooden cabinet with a top added to transform it into an end table.
Don’t hesitate to explore unconventional options—this is what’s needed to secure quality at a reasonable price.
