I successfully burned an ISO and it appears to be functioning. You're currently using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and you're wondering if you can upgrade to Windows 8 using the Windows 8.1 x64 installation media while preserving all your data. Thanks!

It should function properly once you reinstall the games and programs, keeping all your files intact. A valid key is necessary, but it might cause issues, so a fresh installation is usually safer. It’s better to upgrade now rather than risking problems later. Windows 7 should suffice.

I usually recommend a fresh setup, but you can enhance Windows 7 using the ISO from Windows 8 without losing any data—just load the ISO and you're ready to go.

Choose a fresh setup. The "upgrading" feature is for those unfamiliar with computers, but because you'll need to reinstall everything anyway and the Win 98 installation is quick, proceed with a clean install.

You can find the Windows 8 ISO from official Microsoft sources or trusted third-party providers. Check Microsoft’s website or authorized distributors for the latest release.

Make sure you notice the key you're using. If you have a Win8 key, it won't work with a Win8.1 setup. Microsoft offers keys to resolve this issue—search for them online or try XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB. This isn't illegal, but you'll need to manually activate Win8/Win8.1 after installation. If you possess a Win8.1 key, you're good to go and can use it directly. I strongly suggest choosing Win8.1 instead of installing Win8 and then updating, as that process can be very time-consuming.
