Exploring the creation of a new PC for video editing led me to this Amazon bundle: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard (ATX) paired with AMD Ryzen 2 AM4 DDR4 DP HDMI M.2 USB 3.1 Gen2 B450, along with an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor. It’s not the latest or fastest option, but it fits a budget.
The B450F offers poor overall value. The VRM heatsink is subpar and the VRM components lack quality. More affordable B450 models exist. When using a M.2 SSD, the board turns off SATA ports 5 and 6 as intended. This is normal behavior. The issue arises when SATA ports 3 and 4 cease functioning, leaving only two ports available. During setup, I didn<|pad|> to notice any issues. My setup included a M.2 SSD as the system drive, a SATA 4TB HDD in SATA 1 for storage, a Bluray burner in SATA2, and a SATA SSD for user data in SATA3. After installing drivers and software, I cycled through reboots and still missed my user data drive. It wasn’t listed in the Hardware Manager initially. When I booted into BIOS, it appeared there. I replaced cables and tried again, but it disappeared from both BIOS and Windows settings. Swapping cables between SATA1/2 devices and the missing drives resolved the problem, showing only the active ones. I experimented with various cables and ports, but all pointed to faulty SATA connections on the board. I removed the M.2 drive and retested, which would disable any disabled ports. SATA 1/2 and 5/6 would detect devices, but nothing from 3/4 in BIOS. Additionally, the front panel lights stopped working. Voltage checks revealed no signals where they should be. It looks like this board has a defect.
I'm located in the USA with a budget of $500 to $700 for a motherboard, CPU, RAM, video card, and a new M.2 boot drive. You already have a CPU cooler, case, and PS. You're upgrading from an Asus Hero IV with an i7-4700K CPU and two Nvidia GTX 750 graphics cards.
