Hey! You already have seven devices linked to your current Ethernet hub in the bedroom. To expand, you’ll need another switch. Your idea is to repurpose the 8-port hub you own now for your PC desk later, when you decide to install your computers directly. At the moment everything uses 5G/4G or WiFi. You might consider purchasing a used one from eBay soon—perhaps a Samsung Smart TV or similar—to use where the current switch fits.

The new switch you’re thinking of is a Samsung Smart TV Series 6 with Chromecast Ultra, 4K support, and an Xbox series X. You’ll also be connecting a few NAS devices, which are still relatively slow compared to modern standards. I understand you’re eyeing a price around $18 for the 8-port model on Amazon, but since you need a 16-port option, it’s likely priced higher there. The used version on eBay is close to what you paid for that switch, so it should work fine.

Your main worry is whether an older hub will affect your NAS performance. Since your modem/router (Arcadyan KVd21) already supports gigabit ports, a 2.5 or 10G port shouldn’t hinder your NAS. I think everything should function properly once you set it up.

Thanks for reaching out! Feel free to ask if you need more details.

You can always chain those switches together.

I have limited knowledge of networks. You might consider purchasing an additional 8-port switch from Amazon and connect them together.

I might be able to, but I’ll need something else eventually when I finally get my PCs connected by cable. This should be the most affordable option with minimal hardware required.

It depends on your specific situation and needs. An older gigabit switch might not offer the same performance or features as a newer model, so you should compare specifications and consider what matters most to you.

If you manage to find something around 20 dollars, get another one. An old, used one you’ll never know how long it lasts—like how a power adapter might fail after a while.
