The 16-core 7945HX3D with cache optimizer closely matches the 7800X3D, making it worth thinking about X3D MoDTs instead of a standard desktop CPU priced over $500. For gaming benchmarks, power consumption, and thermal performance, skip to 9:15. Unlike the BD790i from Minisforum, this TOPC board offers more BIOS features (EXPO) and fully utilizes all PCIe lanes from the CPU, including SATA ports. However, it lacks full support for the cache optimizer driver, so a 7950X3D system drive was needed. With improved cooling, the 7945HX3D now delivers gaming performance close to the 7800X3D (as noted in Guru3D reviews), matching or surpassing it—especially for multithreaded tasks, not just gaming.

It's like getting a laptop that behaves more like a clunky old CPU than a smooth machine. Unless you're really experienced, this setup is risky and full of surprises. The processor once had great promise, but now its problems—some fixed, others still lingering—have really hurt its performance.

7945HX3D is a direct-die TDP capped at 7950x3D built for laptop-style boards. Minisforum offers a version of this in the US. The TDP restriction isn't too strict, and the chip typically operates around 45W during heavy gaming tasks.

It's odd that there are still some advanced settings like tertiary timing adjustments and DDR submenu options, even though core features such as PBO co and voltage adjustment TDP seem missing. The presence of Uxtu and Smokeless UAF suggests it shouldn't be too big of a problem. However, the overall cost depends heavily on the board price—starting around 100$ for capable boards like the Atheros B850M Pro-A—and the CPU cost can be estimated by subtracting the board price.

It's surprising it doesn't do much better than Coffee Lake-S in well-cooled laptops even with a 130W+ power cap, especially for 4090M models.

These kinds of setups are quite unique. I believe the strict power caps on laptops create significant challenges. While a 4090M handles its heat budget well compared to its power draw, boosting it to double the capacity usually only yields a modest performance gain. When we look at the 7950HX3D with a direct-die soldering and a mITX board, it clearly outperforms a typical laptop in this configuration. I'm replicating a similar approach but using a custom 9800x3D rig now, because my air cooler is limited. That forces me to stick to TDP restrictions and lower voltages to maintain high clock speeds. I haven't even tested Cinebench yet—I’m confident it will hit its limits under heavy load, even with those safeguards. Luckily, it only draws around 60W during a gaming session and stays under 80°C at 5.2GHz.

Choose a board featuring an additional PCIe or M.2 port—one dedicated to the GPU, two for storage, and one supporting 10GbE.

For SFF PC I hope to see a big X3D card soon. Maybe later.

This board includes two M.2 slots on the back. I'm not sure about 10GbE—maybe an x4 setup using an x16 to x8*2 adapter could work, but it would be complicated. If you even locate this board online, let alone find it reasonably priced. (TOPC Z79HX with X3D specifically)

You're noticing prices around 1500 and 2100 RMB for non-X3D items on Taobao, which is a bit concerning. It might still be worthwhile after taxes.
