Hello everyone, I've developed several systems and feel fairly competent with Ryzen processors. However, I'm still learning and often feel stuck. Recently, I installed a system with these specs: Ryzen 7 1800X, Gigabyte B450 Gaming, 16GB XPG 3000MHz RAM (dual channel), Vega 56 GPU. Initially everything worked well, but during testing I noticed lower performance in the R15 core compared to a Ryzen 7 1700. Even under synthetic loads, my CPU never exceeded 85% usage and clocked down to 3.1 under stress. At first I thought it was thermal throttling, but after checking AMD's data and running Windows Performance Power profiles, I confirmed temperatures stayed below 70°C with no spikes. My BIOS is updated, so I'm not sure what else to try. Anyone else have encountered this issue? Thanks ahead!
the gigabyte b450 lacks sufficient power delivery to reach full performance on a 1800x. Tier E: draws 75A with minimal airflow, capable of 1600X and 3600X, slightly above the 2500X limit seen in the gigabyte b450 aorus pro, elite, am, x, s2h, ds3h, ittx.
I struggle to accept it since it appears on the supported CPU list on the gigabyte site and is rated for 105W. However, adding a bit more research, I have a Tier D motherboard available, so I’ll consider using it. I’m sure they’ll appreciate your response if it works with the ASRock board. Thanks!
It might be suggested that the motherboard isn't powerful enough. Your CPU seems to handle it, which qualifies it for the "supported cpu" category. However, this doesn't guarantee it operates at its maximum capacity. There could be a similar problem elsewhere on this forum involving the same motherboard model. Alternatively, the high power consumption might cause the VRMs to overheat and interrupt power delivery.
This situation occurred with me too. My tier E motherboard handles the 2700X just fine, but it performs much better on the 1700X in Cinebench tests.
