hello, i'm working on setting up two pc's and was planning to buy a skylake 6700k, but some issues arose, so now i need to adjust my budget. i've chosen one of these two cpus and will upgrade to skylake in about two to three months. which one would perform better for gaming? also, would either of them cause a bottleneck with the gigabyte 970? i was thinking of overclocking the 4690k if possible, but i don't have any benchmarks comparing the two cpus. thanks.

I can't wait that long, my computers are about to fail—ram, hard drive, and GPU are all failing. (8 year old build) Which one would you recommend for gaming? Both are around my budget. I’m considering the Xeon but still unsure. Would it outperform the i5 in games? It really depends. If certain apps use hyperthreading, the Xeon might edge ahead. An overclocked i5 4690k could be faster than the Xeon for non-hyperthreading apps because of its higher clock speed. Of course, with an overclocked i5 4690k you’d likely match what a stock i5 6600k can do. I think the Xeon is a...

If you intend to visit Skylake soon, consider postponing your efforts. Alternatively, continue with the project you're currently working on.
The xeon e3-1231-v3 functions similarly to an i7 CPU but lacks integrated graphics. The i5 4690k is adequate for gaming purposes. If you desire the xeon and have sufficient funds, it's acceptable.
Neither processor will cause a bottleneck with the GTX 970.

I can't wait that long, my computers are almost dying—ram, hard drive, and GPU are all failing. (8 year old build) Which one would you recommend for gaming? Both are around the budget I have. I’m considering the Xeon but I’m not sure. Would it outperform the i5 in games?

which one would you say is better for gaming though, both of them are right around the budget for me. im currently looking at the xeon but im really not sure about it. would the xeon out-perform the i5 in games?
It depends. If any applications can take advantage of hyperthreading, the xeon may be ahead. An overclocked i5 4690k will be quicker than the xeon for any applications that does not support hyperthreading since it has a higher clock speed.
Of course going with xeon you lose overclocking. With an overclocked i5 4690k you would probably match what a stock i5 6600k could do.
I would say the xeon is a better buy since you will have hyperthreading and you can spend less on the motherboard. You could get a H97 motherboard unless you want SLI which you will need a Z97 motherboard then. But remember there is no integrated graphics on the xeon.

I don't care about integrated graphics and will switch to Skylake before I get slid, thanks

I don't find integrated graphics appealing, so I'll upgrade to Skylake before I get there, thanks. I wouldn't really need to upgrade to Skylake afterward either, since the performance difference is negligible.

No, it wouldn't make a significant difference in game performance.

You're wondering if upgrading from a Xeon 1231 to a Skylake 6700k would really make a difference in gaming performance? Probably not a significant gain in cost for a CPU, motherboard, and RAM.
