These groups focus on maintaining specific hardware, with many using x58 by spending large amounts of time. X79 is gaining more appeal now, especially with AVX support, and it’s close to DDR4 technology.

I’m not certain about your current setup, but I’d look at the Anandtech benchmarks to evaluate productivity and decide wisely. For example, on X99 (or C612) you could use an E5-1660 v3 processor available on eBay for under $170, whereas the W-2140B is priced around $188 now or $170 for the QS chip. An alternative benchmarking approach swapped the 5960X for the E5-1660 v3 and the i7-7820X for the W-2140B: https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/2403?vs=2257. The Skylake X/W chips perform notably better in productivity compared to older HSW-E and BDW-E models, mainly due to AVX-512 and higher clock speeds. However, C422 options are currently pricier than C612 platforms. If you already own a T5820, it’s worth sticking with it. Otherwise, consider a T5810 or HP Z440 with Haswell-E CPUs, as finding affordable barebones T5820s under $250 is tough. I’m using a HP Z440 with an E5-1650 v3 and 32GB DDR4-2133R, originally costing about $240 after selling some RAM. I suspect better deals might exist in a year or two if you pursue the C612/C612 path. I’d like to acquire a T5820 myself to experiment with W-2150B CPUs on eBay, but I can’t yet justify swapping my current Haswell-EP system for Skylake-W unless prices drop significantly. Keep in mind that some T5820s are X299 and only support Core X CPUs—make sure to confirm with sellers before purchasing. Cheers. P.S.
