Hello everyone, I’m looking for advice on a problem I encountered with Windows 10. Some users reported that Defender or 'MsMpEng.exe' was consuming 100% of their disk space. This happened when setting up my gaming rig a few months back—it slowed everything down significantly. I tried disabling Defender in the registry and turning off services, which helped somewhat but left my drive at around 80%. Eventually, switching to an SSD resolved the issue. My friend has the same problem, so I’m wondering if there’s another solution besides upgrading to an SSD? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Verify planned activities. Switch to another AV solution. Open gpedit.msc, navigate to Windows Components, and turn off "turn off defender anti virus".
Attempted every solution available. The scheduled tasks don’t resolve the MsMpEng.exe problem, which appears to be the root cause. Even after switching to a different antivirus (Avast), the 100% disk usage persists despite all your efforts and the original post you shared. For those of us less familiar with technical fixes, this seems like a really challenging issue!
The answer should be found online, though I’ve encountered it only a few times. It doesn’t seem to be widely documented for Windows 10 systems in our office environment.
It seems like you were really investigating the problem. I checked every forum, video, and article I could find. Even Microsoft support engineers tried to help remotely, but they couldn’t resolve it. Ultimately, the best solution was replacing my HDD with an SSD and reinstalling Windows 10.
