I have an HP Z620 and require a serial port for a Nokia data cable. I found a motherboard diagram mentioning "serial (optional)" and noted that RS232 headers have 9 pins instead of the usual 15. Someone confirmed it's an HP proprietary serial header needing an adapter like part number PA716A. Updated April 9, 2024 by i like xeons.
The connection requires the proprietary RS232 port cable, which is only referenced in the service manual on page 110. There’s no other indication of its existence.
perhaps you could attempt to do it yourself? as long as the connections are feasible, but it would take a lot of time and likely cause trouble.
The manual specifies an RS232 serial port header on page 38. The label "COM" nearby confirms this. A clear reference is provided: https://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04205252.pdf. For adding a serial port, the HP part number I located for that kit is PA716A.
I looked into it and found HP offers an adapter compatible with their PCIe bracket slot [search hp pa716a]. They often create exclusive versions without clear reasons, which isn't surprising.
