He seems to be following the trend after Portal RTX's launch, suggesting the original portal will fade away. The idea behind remaking games like Portal and Quake wasn't to create something entirely new, but to push the boundaries of what older titles could achieve in a modern context. There was no plan to replace them, just offering fresh alternatives.

I don't think so. They haven't adopted RTX yet, and sticking with older games is still practical.

fair argument i guess, but counterargument to that is that if you compare the implementation of rtx in portal vs cyberpunk for instance is that in portal its not done very well, in fact the game files for portal rtx vs regular portal are basically the exact same, they both use source so obviously portal rtx is just portal with rtx simply injected into it, add some quick texture changes, make source somehow handle raytracing properly, maybe add some quick extra polygons for fidelity, and boom, great graphics demo for the 4090 meanwhile in games like cyberpunk the graphics have been built up partially around rtx and mix and interact perfectly with it (when the lighting is not bugging out to high hell), yet the implementation of that took a long time they are putting rtx in the latest games, they just need time for the tech to mature and time to actually develop these games with rtx in mind, remember, most (good) games released lets say, 2020 till mid 2021 started development before rtx was even viable, rtx just simply hasn't been around long enough for any non mass-media AAA games to start commonly using it

It was mostly what came to mind. I've been playing a lot lately, and one of the top ray-traced games is Ghostrunner. But that game makes me feel really bad.

It describes how light behaves when it hits different materials, including those that aren't just reflective. This interaction involves various effects like absorption, scattering, and reflection.

I’m not going to debate any more since you’ve entirely missed the main idea of my message.

The article seems lacking in focus and feels more like a collection of criticisms about ray-traced graphics. It highlights issues with performance, optimization, and visual fidelity, especially after the release of Portal RTX. The author believes traditional rendering methods still offer better results compared to the current ray-tracing implementations.

Low poly games on RTX seem unusual. Often they appear poorer than the original, highlighting the lack of detail. Many other titles would gain significantly from RT, unlike Quake 2 or typical FPS games. Simulators are likely to extract the most benefit from it.

You're right, I concur that for many games RTX isn't essential for good lighting quality. You've made some valid observations, even though you think the RTX portal offers better moments than the older one. The area where RTX really shines is VR, because small lighting issues become much more noticeable there. For now, we'll have to wait for the RTX 5090 Ti to make VR gaming smooth with ray tracing.
