Consider third-party tools such as Process Hacker, Process Explorer, or Resource Monitor to check the process list for file or disk activity. If you're sure nothing is consuming space and the program isn't running, simply disconnect it.

Open Task Manager, go to the Performance section, click on Open Resource Monitor, then in the Disk tab, you'll see the program or task accessing the drive—identified by the file name. You can monitor it if needed. For stability, avoid stopping it unless necessary; instead, let it complete naturally and then shut it down or unplug it.
