This new RTX 4090 ZOTAC Trinity is causing frequent crashes on my PC. Should I consider returning it?
I purchased a new RTX 4090 from a well-known UK retailer and installed it just last week. From the beginning, I faced persistent problems. Several games would crash unexpectedly whenever the graphics card was under heavy use, even though the main menus worked perfectly. This issue only appeared during actual gameplay, not in idle mode. It was completely different from my previous RTX 3090 setup. I had never adjusted the clock speed and even changed it to a lower setting, yet crashes still occurred within 10 to 20 minutes. Certain titles performed better under reduced load—such as OW2 or DS3—while others, like COD: MW2, CP 2077, SW Battlefront 2, and Battlefield 2042, consistently failed. On OW2, a warning pop-up appeared stating the rendering device was lost (see attached photo).
I have reinstalled drivers multiple times, including using the DDU tool to uninstall previous ones. I’ve also tried both official Nvidia and studio drivers, but neither resolved the problem.
My troubleshooting steps include:
- Reinstalling drivers three times.
- Re-seating the graphics card twice.
- Resetting all other PC settings via BIOS and Nvidia control panel to check if a combination of factors causes the crash.
- Disabling all antivirus and overlay software (Steam, Discord, Shadowplay, etc.) to see if it resolves the issue.
My PC runs Windows 10 Pro with an AMD Ryzen 9 16-core 5950X processor, an Artic Freezer 2 AIO cooler, and a 360mm radiator. I’m using 32GB of memory (2x16GB) with a G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3600 at 3600MHz. The GPU is the Nvidia RTX 4090 Zotac Trinity, 24GB GDDR6X.
Storage: 500GB Samsung 980 Pro (Gen4), NVMe SSDs (2TB Corsair MP600 + 2TB Samsung 860 Evo + 500GB Samsung 850 Evo).
Operating System: 7200 RPM PSU from Corsair HX Platinum 1000W (80+).
I’ve researched online and found that many 4090 models—especially those from Zotac—tend to be unstable out of the box. Additionally, I noticed that prices for both 4080 and 4090 models have risen about 10% in the past three weeks. If I can’t get a replacement or a refund, I’ll have to pay more.
Currently, Nvidia does not have any FE models available.
I sent it back last week, by the way... The UK supplier said it was defective. But on Thursday I discovered they don’t have any replacements available, so I can’t provide one for you.
