According to what I understand, the main variation lies in the number of processors that can operate simultaneously. (1600 - single socket, 2600 - dual socket, 460 - quad socket.) It's likely the HP BIOS lacks processor codes for the 4600-series, so it won't detect that line. In most cases, if a 2600-series CPU is supported, all of them should work.

Thanks for the update. The Z420 board is confirmed, and I've ordered the E5-2690-V1. I won't be sending it back. Still unsure how to use the E5-4620 V2 yet.
