Hello, thanks for reaching out. I’m trying to figure out the compatible CPU for your Dell workstation. Based on what you described, it seems to be either LGA 1366 or LGA 1356. Could you please share the image so I can better identify the model? That will help me give you the most accurate information.

That is almost certainly an LGA 1366 socket. Supported CPUs will depend on the board's BIOS, but I would be very surprised if something like a Xeon X5650 didn't work, and they're only like $10 on eBay for a pair so not really much harm in trying one and seeing what happens.

It appears to be a Dell T420 model. A service label on the back should display the specifications and included configuration details. The device supports LGA 1356 socket, and is compatible with E5 2640 and E5 2640 v2 CPUs (check server tag for confirmation). If it came with v2 chips, it also supports them.

The distinction lies in the socket type. LGA 1366 uses a 1366 pin configuration, while LGA 115x is a different pin arrangement.

I was incorrect; the correct version is 1356. I overlooked the T420 sticker in the middle, which confirms it's a 1356 workstation.
