Hello. I'm setting up my home network from the ground up. Since I'm not always at home, I need to access my NVR (cameras) remotely while keeping things secure. I'm unsure if Open VPN uses single-thread encryption and I don't know if my Asus GS-AX5400 has any hardware acceleration, so I don't know the speeds you can expect. Another concern is the official ASUS site says their VPN client doesn't auto-reconnect, meaning if my connection drops or goes down, it won't automatically reconnect—something I'd rather avoid. I'm open to other router suggestions, but not necessarily limited to this one model.

@TheSalon112 Are there always connected computers in your local network? I saw NordVPN add a “mesh VPN” function to their client app. According to their description, it lets you link to another device on the same LAN remotely. With this setup, you’re leveraging their own client that includes built-in killswitch and is quite reliable. I’ve also seen Ubiquiti offering something similar via UniFi Teleport. Of course, you’ll need the UniFi Console running and the app installed on the remote machine. It’s also worth noting this works with the AmpliFi Alien when used in native router mode. These methods should preserve high performance because their processors handle encryption well. Running OpenVPN on regular consumer hardware may not be ideal. Yes, you might face killswitch limitations if privacy is critical. Also, speeds won’t be optimal. If you can’t use those features, consider a firewall like pfSense to manage NordVPN connections.
