Why spend money on a new platform when you can improve what you already have to its top version?
I just noticed the 9900k on sale and have a solid board. It seems it’s probably time to replace my 3770k. It might be best to go with the 9900k instead of buying another cooler or MOBO for the Ryzen. Thanks for the advice!
9700k or 9900k would both be pretty tempting deals at good prices. Dont buy into the "upgrade path" noise, if the price is low enough and the deal is good, its still an awesome CPU. Still near the top of most gaming charts, with an OC only bested by a 10700k or 10900k. That kind of performance at a low price is a good deal.
I thought it could be a good idea, especially since my cooler works with the system. I recently cleaned up my loop and it seems I can easily separate the block from the motherboard for an upgrade. Removing the hoses and fittings is always helpful, even if it saves a bit of time.
It's a solid offer, likely around 50 bucks less than what a 9900K is worth now. Perfect if you already have a Z390 board; a 5600X or 10600K won't match it.
Sure, imagine if you could switch to a 4770k/4790k on your current motherboard. Would you go right away? This is the kind of scenario you might face when upgrading later—maybe in five years, you won’t want to jump from 10.7Gb to 11.7Gb. By then, DDR5 will be common, and Intel might have made more progress than they did in the past five years. Most folks don’t upgrade every couple of generations because it doesn’t really add up. Those who do are just buying the latest and greatest when they come out, without worrying about what’s best value or deals.
Microcenter offers the 10700k for an additional 50 units, likely a superior option thanks to upgrade possibilities and expanded motherboard selections. A 9700k for 200 units seems tempting, but securing a quality z390 motherboard at a reasonable cost would be challenging, as the board wouldn't support future upgrades. The 9700k may lose value quickly, but at this price point it's still a strong performer. I might plan to upgrade it next year and resell it on eBay.
