I received a call from a friend asking for assistance with his MacBook Retina 2013 13-inch after it stopped working after sleeping for a week. I attempted various fixes but still faced difficulties. I examined the screen thinking it might be cracked, but found nothing. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM, charging overnight, and reattempting the reset. When trying to power it on, there was no chime, though the caps lock light activated when pressed. I checked if it would show anything on an external monitor, but had no success. I disassembled the device to inspect the motherboard, finding it mostly intact. I unplugged the battery and repeated all steps, except turning it on while the battery was off—only the CPU fan ran and the caps lock lit up. I’m running out of ideas and have never fixed a Mac before. I suspect either the screen is damaged or there’s an issue with the motherboard, especially since it didn’t boot normally in safe mode. My friend mentioned it might be the hard drive, which worries me because without OS it wouldn’t function properly. I’m hoping for guidance to confirm before purchasing a new display. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Updated: January 9, 2024 – Valerio Musco

If you connect an external screen yet nothing appears, the issue likely lies elsewhere—not with the screen itself. The fact that it showed something for your friend supports this conclusion. This situation has been around for about ten years. Possible causes could include RAM or storage problems.

Sure, no worries about missing the ram point. Appreciate the help! I'll still attempt to replace the SSD and wish everything goes smoothly. Installing a new MacOS can be tough, though!
