About seven years back, I set setting up the top AMD gaming setup possible within a budget of roughly a thousand dollars (which turned out to be around $1,200). It was roughly a year before Ryzen arrived. I chose the FX 8370 processor, 16GB RAM at 1866 MHz (DDR3), and an MSI RX 480 8GB graphics card. The build performed impressively, and I've played many excellent titles on it. Even now, launching most games at 1080p with high settings gives me around 60 frames per second, or more, depending on the title. There were a few exceptions; DOOM (2016) consistently hit over 100 FPS at full resolution, while Fallout 4 rarely reached 60fps even when I lowered graphics. I recognized it wasn't the absolute best CPU available back then, but it offered eight cores with a solid clock speed for its price, fitting my goal of an all-AMD build. It marked my first gaming PC in a long time. My previous serious rig featured a GeForce FX 5500 GPU, and since Sony stopped supporting backward compatibility with the PS4 and didn't port digital content to my PS3, I shifted back to PC gaming. Over the years, I rarely faced major problems. Battlefield 1 would occasionally lag, but most of the time it stayed at or above 60fps, and everything was smooth. Some delays ceased once I switched from Windows to Debian Linux, preventing random startup issues from Windows Update or disk indexing. A few years later, I picked up a Steam Deck. After a period away from serious gaming due to work and life, I wanted the convenience of carrying it around. As a Linux fan, seeing a mainstream device from a well-known brand running on Linux was exciting. Since then, about 99% of my gaming has happened on the Deck. Although its GPU power was lower than my old desktop, I appreciated being able to play in comfort at home—even with decent performance in 720p—and some titles like Halo: MCC reached 1080p at over 100 FPS. The power draw was manageable at around 20-25 watts when docked, compared to over 400 watts on my desktop. One thing stood out: despite the lower resolution, the frame rate remained more stable. Battlefield 1, especially during intense moments, performed even better on the Deck. This led me to wonder if the CPU in my Deck was holding up better than the FX-8370 on my desktop. I ran GeekBench across all devices, ensured no unnecessary background services were running, verified fans were active and idle, and let it run. The outcomes were surprising. I expected the Steam Deck to dominate in raw CPU performance, but I hadn't anticipated its power relative to my old machine. Surprisingly, my Pixel 6a phone outperformed the FX-8370 significantly—even with a modest overclock that pushed the FX-8370 above average. Running on just a few watts, it handled tasks like texting and photo sharing better than its desktop counterpart. Even for media encoding, the phone's performance improved after switching from x264 to x265. This experience made me realize the GPU was the limiting factor, not the CPU. Now, I plan to retire the FX-8370 but consider building a smaller system with an APU if I want more efficiency and less power draw. My main need is still converting Bluray discs to ISO files for my Plex server, which has become much smoother with newer codecs like x265. Overall, the GPU's contribution was minimal compared to the phone's capabilities, making the transition both practical and satisfying.

Unfortunately, my budget isn’t in the right place right now—I’m waiting until I return to work next week. I tried the Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade remake on my Steam Deck and it felt mostly okay. The graphics looked a bit blurry when projected at full size, but I didn’t want to use my desktop because even then, audio would stutter randomly. Music from small shops, background chatter, or sometimes the actual voice lines during in-game scenes would freeze up and stop on their own. It seems likely that the problem comes from the game’s FX CPUs struggling with the audio engine, especially when multiple audio tracks are active. On my desktop it ran smoothly at around 60 frames per second in 1080p, so I’m not sure the CPU is the main culprit—it might just mean a lower frame rate. There could also be an issue with missing instruction sets or something affecting performance without stopping the game. This reminds me of the original PC version of Mass Effect; it worked fine otherwise, but if your CPU lacks the 3DNow extension, certain characters turn into black, pixelated shapes. There are community solutions and hacks, but it turned out to be a different technical quirk than just frame data delivery.
