This is the configuration of the computer system.
I'm preparing three new computers this weekend and need suggestions for operating systems. 1. Media center/YouTube uploader – consider a Mythbuntu front end and back end setup. This will handle Netflix viewing and YouTube uploads. 2. Storage server – freenas seems suitable, ensuring compatibility across Windows and Linux systems. 3. Encoder – you might stick with Ubuntu for simplicity on this machine. Let me know if you need more ideas, @Implosivetech
I'm missing the latest updates and one machine can't handle that. Would you like suggestions for OS improvements?
Is there a specific reason you need MythBuntu? For uploading YouTube and Netflix videos, a versatile OS like Ubuntu would suffice (you should also be able to integrate the encoder into this system). You can rely on freeNAS for storage, though be aware it has a steep learning curve. Consider Linux if you prefer not to spend time mastering the operating system.
Mythbuntu is chosen for its home theatre setup. This PC will be placed upstairs, away from the main area, on a laptop. Mythbuntu is essentially Ubuntu but with fewer features, which helps save space—since I’m constrained to 16GB on a flash drive. If Ubuntu can run on that size, I’ll go ahead and use it instead.
For the alternative, I’m considering another Linux distribution and would like support for RAID if possible.
It seems I lack sufficient knowledge of Linux distributions to give a solid suggestion. You're right about freeNAS—it has a steep learning curve and demands more powerful hardware than many alternatives. I've only worked with Ubuntu before, which performed quite well as a simple server or NAS during its time.
Install Ubuntu or Debian on all three distributions and configure a single local APT cache to reduce downloads.
