Join the city states to earn plenty of free units and resources. Also, be careful not to upset others—avoid provoking them so they don’t turn against you.

I messed up by attacking every city state in my game. Luckily Rome was bigger and tried to take over everything. But I had the best army, the richest, so I freed everyone, paid them off, and wiped out the rest. Focus on wealth and science. Build roads and don’t trust Gandhi.

The advisors can be useful when you're just starting out, but often people follow their suggestions without understanding how the buildings actually function. The key is knowing what your city and its tiles generate, how to shape them to meet your goals, and what each resource brings. Learn about food, hammers, gold, culture, science, and faith within the game. Spend time reading what each building does and which technologies you gain, keeping both long-term success and short-term objectives in mind. Describing everything in one post would be too much, but I suggest checking out the player Filthyrobot who streams regularly and creates Civ 5 guides (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_YIEAH...t98E6hQI9Q). The Enhanced UI mod is also very helpful—it provides more details with fewer clicks.

Recommend beginning with quick or standard games on smaller maps to become comfortable with controls and icons. Proceed gradually. Be patient, take your time, and read everything available—tools, tips, advisors. If something is unclear, consult the help section; the civ-pedia resources offer extensive explanations for most topics. Good luck and enjoy!
