This installation isn't working at all.
Hey everyone! Just had my Radeon RX 6700XT, and I ran into a tricky issue installing 20.04 from scratch. The standard install window didn’t appear at all—after checking the DVD media for errors it just went black. Even the basic error-check screen looked much simpler than before. Could be that the 20.04 installer doesn’t have the necessary drivers for this GPU, which might explain why the menu never shows up. Thanks for your help!
I'm new to Linux but have some basic knowledge of Pop_OS, which is built on Ubuntu. You can pick either NVIDIA or AMD installer and it usually comes with the latest drivers. I'd consider giving it a shot if you don't just want Ubuntu. I haven't faced any problems installing it on various systems so far. It's available on the System76 website.
The 6700XT might not be compatible with Ubuntu 20.04. Manjaro or Fedora 34 Beta would likely offer better initial support. It should run on kernel 5.10 or newer, along with upstream linux-firmware, and possibly a more recent Mesa version than what Ubuntu provides.
It seems the installer likely failed because there were no recent drivers available for the latest RX6700XT on the Ubuntu 20.04 DVD version. The "black screen" might have stemmed from missing drivers, though it could also have other causes. I noticed the installer worked smoothly with a previous GPU on the same system. Thanks for the insight!
Begin diagnosing by removing the GPU from the system and linking the monitor to the MoBo’s power port. Is the PSU capable enough?
