Hi everyone, I got an older iMac (A1225) and want to use it for my kids. It was reset by the previous owner, but now I’m getting the error “this item is temporarily unavailable.” I have an Apple account from when I owned an iPhone 6s, and I tried using that too. I’m stuck and keep seeing the same issue. I’ve checked many online guides, but nothing helped. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be really appreciated.

It seems your device was probably reinstalled with a paid OS X version. As a new user, you don’t have the necessary license and the system is failing to locate it. When OS X first launched, upgrades were sold as software. Think of it like taking a Vista machine, erasing the disk, installing it without a license, and giving it to someone else—similar to what you’re facing now. You’ll need to build a bootable drive with a valid OS X/macOS license. Later releases are free and available on the App Store, though compatibility isn’t guaranteed. If your setup supports them, you might be able to download the free versions. Otherwise, you’ll have to purchase a Mountain Lion license for about $20. Unfortunately, this process must be done on another Mac using your own Apple ID in the App Store.

To reinstall macOS Base System via the internet, press Shift-Option-Command-R. Once ready, you may temporarily turn off System Integrity Protection. Open Terminal from the Utilities menu and execute the command csrutil disable. If this fails, consider installing a free OS from a USB ISO without SIP enabled, such as FreeDos.
