this situation unfolded differently than expected. I switched back to Linux and noticed the audio completely disappeared. I thought resetting ALSA might be the issue, but it could also relate to an extension—something that doesn’t work when I use pulse or system tray volume. The sound wouldn’t play or even mute properly. After fixing it, the GUI became quieter, but then it crashed. I used tty to bring back GDMA3 and pop-desktop. Now every login requires entering a specific command from the SS to restore audio. I performed all these steps after posting my query.
I restored the entire operating system (formatted) and that resolved the issue. I attempted to use a live ISO and installed the Volume Mixer extension to determine whether the problem was with the extension or the OS.
