I linked an RGB fan to my board, and when it was turned on the board began smoking. I immediately switched off the power to my PC and removed the fan from the board. Now that the PC is running, the board's hotspot becomes very hot and red. I’m curious if this affects my GPU or CPU. Can I use this as proof in a warranty claim? Please check the 15J40 capacitor or IC near the RGB header.
Most RGB fans need a special controller to function properly. If the connection doesn’t match the correct protocol, they might not qualify for warranty. But if the device still operates, the issue is likely with the RGB control itself.
The board functions, but once I power it up it begins to emit an odor and it seems to be burning. The GPU and processor remain active.
With the heat and redness, it’s best to avoid using the PC any more. I’d pretend to be oblivious and reach out for warranty assistance so you don’t have to replace it.
That’s not ideal, seems like a component that can be taken out. Check if they’re open to fixing it under warranty or assisting with repairs. If you need local help, they should know how to safely remove the shorted parts so it works without the RGB features. Also, could you clarify which RGB fan and motherboard this is?
The second RGB header available on that board can be used once the heating/burning problem is fixed. Confirm your device supports that header.
