I received my new GPU today! But this tiny troublemaker wouldn’t let me remove it. I tried pushing it in, pulling it out, not a thing, and it only came out when the plastic metal piece broke off. Here’s the Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08MTKJ6HM/ My worried questions are: What’s the model name? How can I replace it? If it came loose, did it affect the PCIe slot? Is it safe to install my GPU now? How do I check if the PCIe slot is damaged? Do I need to swap out the whole motherboard? Updated January 15, 2022 by DankDoodles

Use the board in its current state.

I damaged my X570-E Gaming board during testing, but the main issue is missing parts—it’s just a retention clip with no real replacement options. It’s mostly disappointing knowing it won’t work, though I didn’t harm the PCIe slot or anything else.

1. PCIE Clip/Tab/Lock included.
2. Unlikely unless you locate a compatible motherboard.
3. Extremely improbable.
4. Yes, my ten-year-old PC has functioned without it for about seven years. Given your powerful card, I recommend adding a GPU brace.
5. Inspect the slot’s metal housing for any bends or cracks. Examine the broken clip for missing components. If found, trace its position. If not, try reinserting the GPU.
6. It doesn’t seem to work properly. The lock mechanism keeps the GPU securely in place when plugged in, making accidental removal difficult. To release it, gently press the clip’s wing—sometimes a firm press is needed. When activated, it pushes the GPU side outward to aid extraction. In some instances, the clip was removed cleanly from its original spot, suggesting it may be repairable.

I really dislike these clips. I get what they're meant for, but it looks like the fix is actually making things worse. Luckily, some motherboard manufacturers have improved their options now.

Imagine a world where all motherboards come with ASUS ROG Q-release and every brand offered it across the board, not just on premium models.

It happened when I shot my 3080, it was way too large... but that’s fine, it still functions properly.
