I recently assembled a new setup and faced serious software problems. I experienced frequent BSODs. My games would crash after just a short play session—task manager showed the GPU reaching 100% usage while the driver would fail. Even a clean installation of Windows didn’t work properly. Eventually, I resolved it by removing one of the RAM modules; everything functioned smoothly afterward. It’s fast, reliable, and performing well so far. My question remains... why? Here are my specifications: ASUS Tuf X570-PLUS WiFi 2x16GB sticks with Corsair Vengance 3600mhz RAM, Ryzen 7 5800X3D ROG STRIX 3080 10GB OC II 850W, Corsair 80+Gold Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVMe (for Windows only), plus several extra drives I’ve gathered. I followed the MOBO guide and set RAM to the A2 + B2 slot. After resetting the CMOS and updating the BIOS to version 4402 (as of April 2022), everything is working as expected. As long as my PC operates, I won’t complain, but I’d rather have all the parts I purchased. Anyone know what might be behind this issue? I saw someone else with the same problem using different RAM, but their setup was different. Thanks in advance!

Ryzens and the platforms that back them are quite particular about RAM capacity. I discovered this firsthand. There are strict limits on total storage, and some RAM models don’t work well on certain boards, particularly in specific setups. Thirdly, knowing your exact RAM details matters a lot—many just mention speed and manufacturer/series, but the SKU is key. Here’s the recommended RAM compatibility chart for your processor board. If your SKU isn’t listed, it might be the issue or part of it. https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/So...0_0423.pdf Added: As @Noble3212 notes, dual-rank RAM tends to perform better. Without a QVL suggestion, it’s uncertain and could cause instability. These are the only 3600 Corsair kits that fit your board. The simplest way is to use the link I shared, search with Ctrl+F and paste your SKU. Updated October 18, 2022 by An0maly_76 Revised, more info

These processors work significantly more efficiently when using dual-channel configuration.

The RAM was purchased as a set, or were the individual components acquired separately?

Purchased a kit, thanks! This info is really useful. I had no idea how sensitive RAM can be. My SKU is cmk32Gx4m2d3600c18, but it doesn’t appear here. I have some older RAM sticks I could swap in temporarily until I get a fresh set. I’ll keep an eye on the situation and update you soon.

It appears this setup is unusual since it's a 2x16 configuration not listed. The C18 chipset is compatible, but likely not the 2x16 form factor. The boards and processors can be tricky to get right. RAM performance might vary depending on the system. Some kits seem optimized for Intel or AMD differently.

Reminder: Unless your intended upgrade matches this list, it could cause further issues. Possible fixes include turning off DOCP and letting them run at their default speeds (2666 or 2993). Right now, just install one DIMM.

Reviewed the BIOS and noticed DOCP is already turned off. Likely just need to swap this RAM for one from the list. Will make sure to return the old units once the new ones arrive. Thanks! I’ll let you know when it’s done. It could take a few days.

UPDATE: I ran a few more tests with the RAM just to see what was happening and heres what I found: (assuming ram slots in order are: A1 A2 B1 B2) Single RAM stick in the far back (B2) works fine. Tested with both RAM sticks. So the RAM is not bad. Dual channel in A2B2 (recommended setup according to manual) it crashes and errors out. With SINGLE stick of RAM in A2, crashes and windows refuses to start. With SINGLE stick of RAM in A1, the same thing happens. Windows wont start and immediately tries to go into recovery. I have not tried dual channel in A1B1 since the manual recommends A2B2. I also figured that if SINGLE channel doesnt work in any of the front slots (A1A2) then I dont see why it would work in A1B1 configuration. Do you guys think it would work if I DID try A1B1 config? Or is the MOBO busted?

I attempted to reuse my old RAM module. The SKU matched the QVL list for my MOBO, yet the problem persisted. Once I swapped it back to one RAM stick, it worked. It seems the issue might be related to the MOBO itself.

I’d suggest confirming the mobo’s manual for dual-channel compatibility. Each model has unique requirements, and these settings can vary significantly. It might simply mean it functions well in single-channel mode across most configurations, but switching to dual could introduce specific issues.
