I've been considering an upgrade from a 7600k to a higher-end model for my PC. I'm aiming for 1440p at 144hz with maximum settings, and currently manage around 50+ chrome tabs open. I found a good deal on a 9600KF for $309 AUD (about $198 USD) and the cheapest 3600 for $329 AUD (around $210 USD). The 9600KF requires a more costly motherboard, but it still costs roughly $50 AUD more. It offers better gaming performance, especially when overclocked. On the other hand, the 3600 is cheaper overall and supports more threads, though it doesn't support as much overclocking. I'm still undecided but think the 9600KF gives a noticeable boost even before overclocking, while the 3600 seems like a smarter choice for future-proofing.

It runs smoothly without significant issues, especially in gaming, though other tasks highlight the strengths of the Ryzen 5 3600.

The 3600 definitely offers a smoother gaming experience with more consistent minimums, even though average scores might be slightly lower in certain titles. You can find reviews on Techspot that highlight these points. It also features many multithreaded improvements, which extend its lifespan and provide better upgrade options if needed. There was a promotion at Shopping Express last weekend for $289, but it seems the deal is no longer available.

I won't purchase any non-HT CPU again after my last Haswell.

An alternative choice might involve 1600 AF or 2600, with OC later on when prices drop, allowing an upgrade to a 3900x or similar.

You can adjust the BIOS to include 9600KF, though it involves some complexity. It requires dedication and effort if you're committed.
