Been using 16gb for a while now but now recently when I rebooted and went into bios or something like that, randomly the second stick disappeared. I moved them around when it happened a few days ago and it recognized it, but it happened again and I can't manage to get it to work now. So a failing ram stick or slot right? Well that's what I thought but here's the case so far: - Both of the sticks work in the first slot - Neither of the sticks work in the second slot *BUT* A random other stick I have WORKS in the second slot . What. It also happened sometime that it showed 16gb ram (as an amount) in the bios but only registers the stick in the first slot and says n/a for second stick still, and same with hwinfo. But that other stick gets recognized fine. What is with this damned board? It's supposed to support 16gb Mobo is a ASUS MB H81M-R (DDR3, Two slots, says max 16gb of 1600mhz unbuffered ram) Ram sticks are 2x Samsung M378B1G73DB0-CK0 (8gb ddr3 1600) Cpu is an i7-4770
I faced a comparable problem with my Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite a few years back. Because I wasn’t very familiar with tech, I sent it in for an RMA, but the real issue was the BIOS. The solution turned out to be flashing the BIOS, which is exactly what the RMA repair addressed. Looking back, I’m surprised and a bit puzzled by the outcome.
Consider the possibility of a damaged RAM slot while the lower-capacity 2GB stick remains functional since it only uses modules on one side. It might not be drawing all pins or bandwidth, depending on the setup. I’m not sure about the exact mechanics, but it could work. If you decide to switch kits, you might still end up with mismatched RAM. It’s a bit frustrating.
Consider rearranging the CPU placement for potential benefits.
I just attempted it and there were no changes. I also refreshed the BIOS using the newest version, but it didn’t help.
I hope I understand what’s happening right now. It seems like I’ve messed up the RAM sticks many times and restarted several times, which caused Windows to crash and show a “unbootable volume” message. Then the computer booted into BIOS with 125GB of RAM installed. I’m really confused about everything now.
