Thinkpad E490 remains inactive with 5GB of memory in use.
I've observed significant idle RAM consumption on my Thinkpad E490, which is around three months old. During idle mode the usage sits at roughly 42% or 5GB, occasionally reaching up to 6GB. I discovered that the Lenovo.Modern.ImController process, possibly from Lenovo firmware like Lenovo Vantage, accounts for about 1-2GB—running around 13 times. What’s puzzling? Additional tasks involving Lenovo in the name can contribute another 500MB. My main concern is whether I should remove all Lenovo firmware updates. As far as I recall, BIOS updates were handled via Lenovo Vantage (please confirm if you need further help), and some drivers or thermal management tools are also updated through it. Regarding other programs, I’d consider removing or disabling applications like Norton AntiVirus, Steam, iCloud, and a password manager, as they collectively use up to about 400MB. * All figures are either ranges or maximum values, which don’t always add up—sometimes they reach nearly 1GB, excluding the OS. I’d like to identify other background processes that might be contributing to this high usage. Thank you for your advice.
You could do a fresh setup, stripping out all Lenovo excess or searching for them on your own. Each laptop comes with built-in programs, no matter what function it serves, according to my experience, the device manages its resources like a personal space.
Creating everything from scratch would be a major challenge because I've been using it since the start of January.
Use tools like CCleaner to check what starts automatically when your PC powers on and remove unnecessary programs.
I checked all the autostart entries and found only the items marked as "wanted." Would you like to remove some Lenovo Firmware updates?
Sometimes RAM isn't shown as active, it could be in a "requested" mode set by an app. For instance, certain games might show 12GB of RAM in just a few seconds at startup, even though it's not actively using it—just in case it becomes necessary.
I don’t usually store apps from any laptop brand. If a program asks for BIOS updates, I’d install it only when necessary.
