I just considered a less refined option but appreciated the urban vibe: check out that link for a compact USB adapter with multiple ports. You could connect it directly to one of the internal USB headers, rearrange the boot sequence so the hard drive boots first, then USB, and keep a reliable backup drive ready. Adding a cable management system would make it even more discreet.
