They say your retail box CPU is an OEM/TRAY model and won’t provide a bootkit.
Hi everyone, I received a 5800X from CXXXRAL COMPUTER in SF. It turns out the motherboard BIOS needs an update, but the store is a bit far away. I applied for an AMD bootkit, but when I sent them the serial number and part number, they said it's an incorrect SN for PIB and that it's an OEM processor. However, the QR code on my retail box confirms it's genuine. I'm a bit confused now. Is AMD trying to avoid sending me a CPU for the BIOS update, or did I get scammed by the local shop? Anyone have an opinion?
It could have been re-packaged. Multiple identical items were sent back or were meant for machines but replaced with retail parts for the problem at hand. You might need to extract the CPU and check its numbers against those on the box; if they don’t match, contact the store to clarify what’s happening.
Contact AMD through other channels such as Twitter or email. Reach out via supported services outside their official support lines. Senior management can take authoritative steps and may review your case to determine possible solutions. As mentioned, you own a retail box—check the store for a replacement (the purchase price applies, not OEM).
The serial number and part number on the CPU lid match those listed on the box. However, this purchase and warranty process with AMD has been quite disappointing. The system remained under my bed for over a week and a half, and I’m still unable to use it. Sad.
You're correct, contacting AMD's anti-fraud team might be a good idea. Thanks for the feedback!
As discussed earlier, reach out to the store or call them and inform them about your problem. If they have a good reputation, they might let you borrow a CPU to perform the BIOS update.
