I'm doing a straightforward case swap with a friend. The benefit is I have plenty of used HDDs and SSDs. So far, I've damaged 3 SSDs and 3 HDDs. One HDD caught fire. What's unusual is that a new SSD works perfectly and lets me install Windows. When I add another HDD for more space, both get fried. What might be causing this? I'm running out of hard drives to test.
I was taken aback when you didn't halt after the initial failure. "Roll another cheese down the hill to locate the first one"?
Purchase a budget ATX PSU tester and inspect all SATA and Molex connectors for proper polarity. If a +12V wire is mistakenly linked to the +5V or +3.3V rails because of a wiring mistake, smoke will emerge.
For instance, testing a SATA connector in the tester alone should reveal the correct voltage under +12V1 or V2, +5V, and +3.3V. If +5V appears under +12V and +12V is under +5V, the connections are incorrect.
