I understand that certain cores perform better, and the CPU tends to prioritize them. However, I notice 7 threads are being used more often than others in Windows. I expected fewer numbers like 4, 6, or 8, but 7 seems unusual. This suggests at least one core is assigned work to a single thread repeatedly. I'm curious if anyone can explain this behavior. It doesn't seem like a major issue, but it feels odd. Is this just a peculiar characteristic of my CPU? Could SMT favor one thread path more than others? Is this specific to Windows or a general trend?
I'm holding off on upgrading until GPU costs stabilize. I used Nvidia Broadcast in a Skype call, which let the GPU run and take advantage of RTX capabilities.
I don’t have the word goodness to describe it right now. The goal is to ensure the fastest cores are prioritized, so under loads that don’t fully utilize the CPU, the same high-performance threads are used. With Ryzen boosting, this results in slightly improved performance.
Typically I see 0.1% utilization across all cores during idle time, possibly due to unnecessary software running.
It’s conceivable that on your particular chip thread 7, performance and heat are balanced best. This could be a Windows quirk rather than a real issue. I’m not sure, but AMD processors are often designed this way, so it wouldn’t be unexpected if Intel follows suit.
