Hi everyone! I’m considering upgrading from my current PowerLine setup to cat6 cables for my laptop connection. While cat5 and even cat5e can support 1Gbps over short distances, I’d like the extra reliability and bandwidth certainty. I’ve read about UTP and FTP cables online—UTP lacks shielding against interference, while FTP offers some protection but may not be ideal for a home power line. Since part of the signal travels through the electrical wiring, which likely has a lot of noise, I’m wondering if FTP would still work well in this environment. Thanks for your help!

If you can reach 1g on cat5, cat 6 will make no difference. I see no reason to upgrade. Sheilded cables normally make most sense outside or with lots of other cables where interference is a problem. For most uses UTP is fine.
