I acquired an i7 8700k and replaced it with my previous i5 6600k. After reinstalling everything and turning it on, there was no power reaching the motherboard. I tried a different PSU without success. The CPU came out with some burn marks—were these indeed damage marks? I had to remove the camera for clearer visibility of the areas. The marks are along the left side, mostly at the top left. Did this CPU cause your motherboard to fail?

This happens because the 6600K and 8700K aren't compatible on the same motherboard. Or maybe you accidentally swapped them?

You attempted to install an 8700K on a 6600K system, which won't work without extensive BIOS adjustments. Boards from the 100 and 200 series aren't compatible with 8000 and 9000 series CPUs, while 300 series boards can only run 6000 and 7000 series chips.

Understood. For OP: I strongly believe nothing was harmed or destroyed during the process, only that the CPU likely came from its original packaging and remains entirely safe—you simply didn’t realize it until now.

Hey, you seem really confused! Did you think the i7 used the LGA1151 socket? It looks like your motherboard might be damaged, and it’s not receiving power.

This connection point is unrelated to compatibility; it's just a random occurrence that often functions. It's unlikely you damaged anything, and you're probably not the first person to experience this, though nothing serious occurred.

Intel 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th generations all use LGA 1151 connectors. However, I believe the 6th and 7th generations are built with 1151v1 while the 8th and 9th generations feature 1151v2. This makes them incompatible with each other. The 6th/7th generation boards support 100/200 series, whereas the 8th/9th generation boards are compatible with 300 series. It seems you haven’t caused any issues. Is it functioning properly with the i5 processor? I’m still puzzled as to why Intel didn’t introduce an 8th/9th generation LGA 1152 socket. At least there should be a clear distinction between the sockets!

Probably just my assumption, but we'll find out soon enough when you try the old CPU again...
