Typically a disc is used to install the game, but I’m not sure when they began using keys.

A few include a key but half can be found online easily, while others involve DRM restrictions. Some need the CD to play but patches can disable them.

They usually need a key during installation. Almost everyone also needs to insert a CD for playback. You can mimic this using .ISO files and Daemon Tools, etc.
