I received this one-year-old Asus G732 laptop with an i9-10980HK and an RTX 2080 Super. It shows thermal throttling even when idle, with temperatures jumping rapidly—like from 93°C to 60°C in just a couple of seconds. I’m unsure why it came with liquid metal and it’s acting this way despite low usage. Over the past year it hasn’t been heavily used, but gaming sessions were intense. The CPU temperature stays high even at around 10% load, reaching 93°C or more during games, while the GPU stays near 70°C even under full load. What could be causing this? Are there any fixes I should try? Thanks a lot.

You might try Throttlestop to lower the voltage on your i9 and possibly limit its turbo frequency. This could prevent the CPU from needing excessive power during those peak speeds.

It's quite advanced, but XTU can also be used for underclocking and offers additional features.

At least with four cores, the clock speed stayed above 4 GHz during stress tests in XTU, though temperatures were between 93–96°C. Would you think a TIM reapplication might be necessary? Or is there something about liquid metal laptops that needs reapplying over time?

Attached are two pictures. It wasn't a long session—just a 10-minute test. The temperature is already high, 97°C even after removing the back plate and cleaning the fans thoroughly. The airflow was good, but the outgoing air feels around 60°C or 70°C, not the usual 90°C+. I own an ASUS TUF gaming laptop that can reach up to 80°C, and when I place my hand near it it gets very hot, unlike this ROG model. What do you recommend? Should I apply thermal compound again? Options like Liquid Metal (factory-applied), Kryonaut, or Noctua NT-H1 might help. Also, I noticed the GPU stutters to 1300Mhz after about a minute while playing Fortnite, causing noticeable lag. Could this be related to the CPU? The GPU temperature in normal use was only about 60°C at 90% load and 1.9GHz.
