Hi everyone, I'm someone who used to play PC games but now works from home. My little one is always daydreaming about building my first PC again after a year. Right now I’m planning to wait until the end of the year for new graphics cards, but I’ve been putting together a basic gaming setup on a £1k budget. This project feels pretty thrilling these days... My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 3 3300X at 3.8 GHz quad-core (£160.43 from Overclockers.co.uk). The motherboard I’m using is the ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 model (£57.98 on Amazon UK). For memory, I’ve got Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB DDR4-3200 (£66.48 from Scan.co.uk). Storage is a Western Digital Blue SN550 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME drive (£68.18 from Newegg UK). The graphics card I’m eyeing is the Gigabyte Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB gaming version (£268.98 on Amazon UK). I’ll be using a BitFenix Nova ATX case (£34.55 at Currys), a Corsair TXM Gold 550 W power supply (£69.99), and a 24-inch AOC monitor (£191.99). I’m also getting a SteelSeries Rival mouse and a HyperX Cloud Stinger headset (£39.99). The total comes to about £988.56.

Regarding the 3300X, I noticed it usually includes a stock cooler. I’m wondering if I’ll need to add thermal paste or other components once it’s installed. If I get this model, does it come fully assembled with everything ready? Thanks in advance for your help!

The stock cooler likely includes some thermal paste already applied. But if your initial installation isn't perfect, you might end up needing more thermal paste.

Great! I'll remember to grab it when I have the chance.

Don't take this board, it's not good quality. You need a motherboard with heatsinks on the VRMs.

Would you like recommendations for a comparable, higher-end product?

Considering the price difference, it's worth checking how such a change would affect the build. Will it boost performance or enhance stability through improved cooling over time?

the motherboard manages and distributes power to the cpu via the vrms. based on the vrm setup on the board and whether it includes a heatsink for the vrms, it can safely provide the necessary power within acceptable temperatures. if the board is low-quality or faulty, the vrms may overheat, causing reduced power delivery to the cpu and forcing it to throttle, which lowers performance.
