Hello! I'm looking into upgrading from an Intel i5 6400 to a newer i5 10600K. I have a few questions about the cooling setup. My current CPU is already paired with a stock cooler, which includes thermal paste. I’m thinking of using the same cooler for my new one since it’s not included. Since I’ve used this cooler for about three years, do I really need to buy fresh thermal paste now? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

The i5 6400 cooler could be insufficient for your needs.

Sure, consider purchasing a fresh thermal paste, which typically costs around $5.

Consider applying it only to your CPU, not the cooler.

When the initial cooler appears similar, think about purchasing a suitable one.

Wouldn't it be better to add more thermal paste rather than replacing the entire cooler? Absolutely, and yes, that's the model you're currently using.

It depends on the cooler you choose; even with the latest thermal paste, overheating could happen. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 works well, but its cost changes based on your location.

Sure, you can still use that cooler, though it might not be ideal if you're expecting high temperatures. Start with it to test performance, and if it doesn't meet your needs, consider upgrading to a better one.

I wouldn't choose an Intel stock cooler for a newer chip since its heat output would exceed what the current processor handles. Instead, opt for a high-quality thermal paste like Noctua NT-H1 or similar. Most CPU coolers include a small tube to help you get started (I’m familiar with that).
