On my MSI MBO there is a M.2 Shiled with two thermal pads beneath the SSD—one sits above the other. One is designed for dual-sided chips, the other for single-sided ones. Both are 1mm thick, but the bonded ones are 2mm. Some people suggest taking out the lower thermal pads completely to see if temperatures drop slightly, even though it might not help the SSD and could actually reduce cooling efficiency. Has anyone confirmed this? The top thermal pad would likely be swapped for a high-quality 12W/MK pad from Gelid.
