Thermal management controls power output but temperatures remain within acceptable ranges.
Hey everyone, it’s confusing whether the slowdown is because of power limits or temperature throttling. Right when the GPU and CPU temperatures hit a certain threshold, performance drops immediately. I’ve tried lowering voltages (undervolting), but it didn’t help much. This really affects gaming, as my frame rate falls from 50-60 FPS to around 12-13 FPS once things heat up. I’m thinking about reworking the cores, though I’m not sure if that would fix the issue since it seems power-related. Any advice would be super appreciated! Thanks!
What temperatures are available? Have you attempted to clean the laptop thoroughly, such as dusting it off?
It seems to be running an Intel U-series processor or something similar. If the 17 Watts limit is imposed by the maker, I wouldn't suggest altering it. Probably throttling indicates a cooling problem. Consider increasing CPU fan speeds using the curve settings—Notebookfancontrol can help. Always ensure the laptop stays connected to power and has at least 10-15% battery charge while gaming. P.S. Check your exact laptop model/version on the back sticker.
It appears you have a Core i5-8250U with a 15W power limit. Intel suggests setting the long-term turbo power to match the TDP (15W), though this is just guidance. It seems your laptop was configured for 17W instead of 15W. The Intel XTU stress test demands an intense workload from a 4-core U-series processor with hyper-threading, making it unsuitable for full-speed performance. Intel XTU indicates power throttling is occurring, likely due to the imposed limits. If you wish to raise turbo power boundaries, you could unlock more performance, depending on whether the manufacturer kept the caps disabled. These chips struggle in gaming when restricted to 15W or even 17W. Temperatures remain within acceptable ranges and are not the issue. They’re built to reduce speed quickly based on heat output.
