I would take apart the entire device and see if there are any signs of burning. It should show visible scorch marks as well. For the graphics cards, you usually need to open them to inspect the circuit board. For warranty reasons, I wouldn't do that unless it's necessary. The lifespan can vary depending on the manufacturer—some models last up to four years.
It turned out to be effective and the sole cause of the smoke smell was probably an overclock added yesterday, which has since resolved.
