Hi. I sometimes spray compressed air onto my PSU for minor cleaning. To avoid the fan spinning, I use a toothpick gently while doing it. This time I forgot to remove the toothpick, so for about 2-3 hours I played games with it without realizing. I only noticed after leaving for a short break that there was a noticeable, slightly burning odor. At first I thought it might be the computer, but my temps and performance were normal. The toothpick didn’t seem damaged, though the PSU felt warm and was a bit painful to touch. It’s around 6-8 years old, so I’m concerned about its condition. Anyone have advice on whether I should keep using it or check further before risking more damage? I’d prefer not to replace everything just yet.

Just one note, it never turned off by itself or displayed any signs of a problem except for the odor and heat. I stopped it right away when I saw it.

Another Rosewill Hive 1000W unit in question. Uncertain if it matches the exact model, but resembles the one you linked.

If the power supply didn't cut itself off, things seem okay. It wasn't operating perfectly, but you're likely alright. The odor might have originated from warm dust particles. A brief inspection inside should reveal its state, especially if the burning smell came from a specific part or several parts.

The odor likely came from the PSU, since nothing else was unusually hot. (The GPU is warm due to load but its temps stayed normal at around 61°C.) Would it be safe to power on the PC now and check if the smell returns?

During the internal check, I was specifically talking about the power supply unit. Of course, it's helpful to inspect it with a flashlight first to spot any visible issues.

I understand, I got the point but needed to examine it closely. I'll check it out if possible.

It looks clear through the installation in the chassis. Updated March 2, 2023 by Godlygamer23

That's the problem. The Meshify C case by Fractal is really hard to view from the front, though you can glimpse some internal details. I managed to capture a few images if that would help clarify things.
