I bought a new i9 9900kf to replace my i7 6700k and did an installation. After setting it up with an antistatic wrist strap, I tried booting to verify the connection. Nothing happened. Once I swapped out the old CPU, it worked fine, but using the new one gave no response—no fans, nothing at all. I think the CPU might be faulty, but I want to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

Your board won't accommodate a 9th generation CPU even if it physically fits. I've only noticed Intel supporting more than two generations before that point. Consider swapping the CPU or getting a new motherboard unless a special BIOS update exists for compatibility.

there's also a chance you fried the cpu because of how the power traces work

You’ll likely require a new motherboard or a compatible CPU for the Z170. (Or whatever you currently own). I’d prefer to replace both and opt for a Ryzen instead—significantly improved performance for your budget.

It would be a 7700k in the premium range, located near Kaby Lake.

It's surprising I missed something so clear, but appreciate your quick help. I'll schedule the upgrade ahead of time.

You might be able to sell your old CPU and motherboard to cover some of the expenses.

Some Z170/Z270 models can be adapted for Coffee Lake CPUs. A few are relatively straightforward, while most require more effort. It’s worth checking online if you have a higher-end board. For lower-end boards, it might not be worth the attempt since you’d prefer a better platform for such a CPU.

It was a premium piece of furniture, but I’m uncertain about the best way to proceed, and I’m unsure whether the potential rewards justify the associated dangers.

I understand. That's why I recommended more choices.
