The scanner lamp attempts to relocate to areas where movement is restricted. To address the issue, consider the following steps.
When the process begins, the location is set up. In that setup, either (A) the limit stop switch isn't functioning, or (B) the gears and mechanical components are failing. For (A), wiring might break and prevent the switch from working properly. Note that the gears are typically made of nylon.

It seems like a positioner band would definitely trigger a limit switch or register on the test scan strip, but neither is happening because...I wonder if you checked for test leads on the photointerrupter or leaf switch? Make sure to clear anything blocking the way. Just like when loading those paper angora sweaters—you really have to go all in!
