There are no suitable upgrades for running a Xeon on a 1151 MB processor.
Hi everyone! Before the pandemic, I had a free i5-6600K and an MSI Z270-A Pro board. The CPU is really bad—seriously, it’s terrible! Launching a VM takes 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the virtual OS. At first, this setup was meant to be temporary, but when Covid came, my savings ran out. Now, with the global chip shortage, hardware costs are up about 20% to 25% compared to before. It’s hard to justify buying a new board, CPU, and RAM. A used i7-7700 is priced similarly to a new AMD chip. I’ve heard Intel might have blocked Xeon chips from certain motherboards, but anyone know of workarounds? Socket 1151 Xeons are around $40, which is what I need for more cores and performance. Thanks! zog
In theory it's feasible, but in real life individuals adjust their boards for 8th and 9th generation CPUs rather than focusing on Xeons.
I’d purchase the 7700K and trade in the 6600K to offset losses. The setup would be quicker overall. The OC 4.6ghz+ air cooling is impressive—no need to replace the board, and it should outperform the AMD 3600 while handling fewer threads. The only faster option besides the 7700K would be the AMD 5600X, aside from a mod to see if the 8700K runs on the Z270, as Jurrunio mentioned.
A used i7-770K is listed at $225 USD on eBay. The Ryzen 5 3600 is priced at $136 USD or $250 CDN on Newegg Canada. I’m based in Canada but travel to the US monthly for medical care, which explains the price variations. Currently, my budget is limited, so I expect to wait until November before purchasing. Bleeping Covid! (EDIT) Perhaps I’ll use my dual LGA 2011 for a desktop and hold off until next-gen DDR5 boards arrive. Though with the chip shortage, it’s hard to predict when that will happen.
