I purchased it yesterday and was surprised by how well it turned out. Initially, the reviews suggested it would be disappointing, but it’s actually quite solid. I believe setting realistic expectations makes a big difference. I had anticipated a poor experience, yet it’s not that bad at all. Most complaints about its limited scope come from players accustomed to open-world or sandbox experiences. If you’re not bothered by that, it’s perfectly acceptable. The main issue is how disconnected it feels from typical city-based games today. There are a few minor annoyances, such as difficulty jumping back down from high places and re-entering after exiting, but overall I’m enjoying it. Critics often give it a bad name because it’s compared to other city-set titles, even though its style is distinct. It lacks the nostalgic charm of Metal Age, but it has its own unique appeal and captures the spirit of Thief well. If you’re a fan of the original or just seeking something different without needing an open world, I’d suggest giving it a go. Those who love Thief might find it worth exploring. :0)
It was okay. The first option remains superior in all aspects. Those who love Harcore thieves will find it tough.
I haven't played the original Thief titles, but the new one falls short completely. It's just average at my view. There are too many loading pauses, annoying QuickTime moments that should disappear, and those tricky wall-pushing sections where you're constantly forcing a 4x4 through the same spot repeatedly—it really bothers me and makes the experience feel sloppy.
I played the original but I was mostly a Metal Age fan. I didn't enjoy Deadly Shadows much, though the latest feels decent compared to what I expected. It offers a strong atmosphere and unique personality. I just wish it leaned more into a Steam-punk vibe typical of the Metal Age. Although I'm only through the first chapter so far, I wouldn't call it a top-tier title overall, but it does what it promises and I'm enjoying it. Personally, my experience has been great, though much of that could be due to my initial disappointment with Deadly Shadows. It's about setting realistic expectations, but if you like the Thief-style gameplay, it can still work.
It relates nothing to open-world titles and focuses on how the latest game feels more like a straight path compared to the varied levels of earlier ones. The AI performance is especially disappointing. Gopher captures this nicely.
They claimed in interviews that the levels would be massive and missions could be tackled in various ways. I didn’t encounter any of those claims. Also, I found the AI performance to be quite poor.
I thought it was fine. The graphics were impressive and the difficulty settings were very customizable—more games should adopt this approach. The mechanics felt solid, with elements like sneaking, swooping, and focusing. I didn’t enjoy the consistently weak AI, nor did I like the supernatural/horror aspects of the main plot. The level design could have been improved. Keep in mind I haven’t played any previous Thief titles. I believed Styx: Master of Shadows offered a stronger stealth experience, mainly because of its level design.
